Shared Standards versus Competitive Pressures in Journalism

Democratic societies need media that uphold journalistic standards of truthfulness and objectivity. But sensationalism has always been a temptation for journalists, given the intense competition between news outlets, especially in online world, there is pressure on them to ‘chase clicks.’ The article analyzes incentive structures journalists – focusing harmfulness sensationalist framing as an example challenges establishing shared highly competitive environment. Drawing concepts arguments from business ethics, it argues structure this problem points ‘ethics sportsmanship’ upholds despite pressures. specific role nature imply can be no once-and-for-all solution. Instead, reflexivity, is, ongoing dialogue about democratic societies.
